Crown & Bridge
Tooth decay, grinding your teeth, an improper bite, age and fillings can all be contributing factors in the wearing down, cracking or breakage of your teeth. Tooth crowns or cappings cover the entire visible surface of your affected tooth and add strength, durability and tooth stability.
Bridges are given when you have some tooth/teeth missing and the surrounding teeth can be used for support. In such cases, the support is taken from the neighbouring teeth to give you false tooth/teeth in form of 'dental bridge' over missing teeth area.
The procedure of Crown & Bridges
Dr. Vineet Sud will carry out the necessary X ray and clinical exam to determine whether the existing tooth structure is suitable for capping procedure. Once it is determined that capping and or bridging can be done then the type of crown and bridges will be discussed with you. All tooth conditions are not suitable for all types of crowns& bridges. Sometimes additional procedures may be needed to modify the available tooth structure to increase the stability and longevity of future crown & bridge. (See crown lengthening procedure)
Once the treatment is decided with your consent, the tooth/teeth will be anaesthetised after applying numbing gels. The teeth are given appropriate shapes (also called tooth preparation) with help of dental rotor drills. The procedure is absolutely painless. After the preparation of tooth structure, impressions are made with special gel like materials. These are then sent to the dental laboratory for the lab work of crown & bridge preparation. You will typically leave the office with a temporary crown/ bridge to wear while the permanent ones are being made - this takes about 5-6 days.

As a rule, Dr Vineet Sud always does a trial fitting of the partially made crown/bridge so that the future product has good stability. This usually occurs 2 days after the tooth preparation visit. The permanent crown/ bridge will come in next 2-3 days. The permanent crown/bridge is then cemented onto your tooth. Before you leave the dental office, we make sure that the permanent crown/bridge is natural and you feel absolutely comfortable.
Typically 3 visits are needed for permanent crown and bridge work and these are spread over 5-6 days. Our labs also provide us express service and provide permanent dental crowns in 48 hours. A prior request for express services is needed from the patients.
Often, a final filling is needed for restoration of your supporting teeth before a crown/bridge can be placed. Due to loss of tooth structure due to decay, this final filling become very essential before cementing crowns.

Types of Tooth Crown/ Bridge
At Crown's & Bridges Dental Care, you are given 2-3 options on the type of crown/Bridge one can go for:
Porcelain Fused to Metal crowns/ Bridge (PFM): These are the most regular and economical crowns available at this clinic. They have a metal substructure over which porcelain is fused. They give reasonable aethethics, and hence we recommend them for back teeth like molars and premolars only. Occasionally a darker line will be visible at the edge of the crown, near to your gum when it recedes with age.
Metal free crowns/ Bridge: We offer two varieties for Metal free crown/ bridges ; Procera (Nobel Biocare) and Cercon (Dentsply)
These have distinct advantages over PFM crowns:
- Lighter in weight
- Metal not present, hence no problem of metal rusting from underneath.
- Absolute color matching- superior esthetics
- Great strength and durability
- No display of metal on aging.
Replacement of old metal crowns with metal free crowns
Gold Crowns: Our clinic also provides the options of gold crown when patients are wanting. The gold is 18K and gives very good tissue response, as gold is highly biocompatible with tissues.
Crown & Bridge Needs Root Canal to prolong the longevity
A crown restores a tooth that has been seriously damaged. While the crown protects the outside of a tooth, it can't protect the soft inner layer called the pulp, which contains the tooth's nerves, veins and arteries.
In some cases, the initial damage repaired by the crown may have spread from the hard exterior of the tooth to the soft inner pulp chamber. In other cases, a crowned tooth can sustain damage that affects the pulp.
Occasionally, while preparing a tooth for crown / bridge purpose, it becomes sensitive to hot and cold because the protective enamel layer is removed during tooth preparation. In many cases, one eventually needs to do root canal in the capped teeth used in the bridge.
We at Crown's & Bridges Dental Care, strive to provide you treatment that is comfortable to you from the moment you leave our office and stays like that for many many years. Hence, we always weigh in the need of root canal treatment before commencing capping/bridge work. On careful evaluation during clinical and X ray exam, Dr Vineet Sud will decide and discuss with you whether RCT needs to be done before capping/bridge work.
